IIPTF 2011 IN REVIEW

The 5th annual India International Pet Trade Fair (2011), saw over a 1000 distributors, manufacturers and retailers from across the globe converge under one roof to interact and participate in what is touted as India’s only pet fair and South Asia’s biggest pet event. Apart from ardent pet lovers one could find dogs of all breeds, cats, exotic birds, rabbits, even varieties of fish that added colour to the event.

Along with activities centred on pets, the India International Pet Trade Fair also showcased an exhaustive range of pet products (foods, clothes, accessories, toys et al), and pet pertinent services (grooming, matchmaking, crèches…) from across India and overseas.

Spread over an expanse of 7000 square feet and housing more than 150 stalls, this edition of the trade fair was even bigger and better than those of previous years. Apart from regular competitions that are a given at this type of fairs, three specialized dog shows organized in association with the India Kennel League (IKL) hogged a great deal of attention – the IKL All Breed Championship, the Dog Obedience Show and a Fancy Dress competition for dogs saw over 100 entries in each category. Nemo, a Rottweiler won himself the award for the Best Breed while Ravinder took away all the laurels as the ‘master trainer’ for training his Saint Bernard.

Deepika Sharma from Delhi had a field day at the fair as her cocker spaniel dog, Moni, looked stunning and confident as she walked the ramp posing as a butterfly. Moni not just managed to turn a lot of heads but she won the much acclaimed ‘Fancy Dress Competition’. Saif Ali Khan, the owner of Jojo, the cat, won many a hearts as his kitty posed for pictures after winning herself the fancy show for cats. Jojo depicted the theme ‘Save the Tiger’ to near perfection and thus impressed the judges.

While these shows were much appreciated and generated a lot of audience, a host of informative seminars and lecturers kept pet owners abreast of latest happenings in areas specific to vet science et al. International celebrities from the pet industry infused a new spirit at the fair. From the popular ‘Dog Whisperer’, John Richardson to master groomer from the European Grooming Association, Umberto Lehman, and Dr Charles Chen from Taiwan, all of them imparted valuable information to pet lovers.
