Hey you enterprising guys n gals ! You want a peek at an exciting business opportunity arising out of love ? Love and passion for animals, that is.

Meet Preeti and Sanjeev, a young upwardly mobile professional couple. Till recently that is before they turned entrepreneurs, dealing with something they love – pets and pet care. Sanjeev was banker with private sector HDFC Bank and Preeti a decently paid public school teacher.

Their despair in failing to find a pet grooming centre, was the starting point in germination of a business venture. Rs four lakhs of investment, and a professional training course in Thailand later, the duo jumped into, what their friends and well-whishers thought was a foolish proposition.

Today, of course, their Neeti Bagh Pet grooming centre that goes by the name – Scrooby Scrub – boasts of a VIP client list that is only getting bigger and bigger.

Says a satisfied Preeti, "Today we have clients like the well-known politician Ram Villas Paswan, industrialist and business houses like Sri Ram and Jindal group who send their pets regularly for grooming. The list of cliental is getting bigger and bigger day by day. On business, Sanjeev would not let out trade secrets but only would offer "It's a good business."

Meet another successful businessman from Mumbai who runs a profitable business venture out of pedigreed pets and owns a chain of shops under the brand name Pets, Pets and Pets. Pritesh Desai calls himself a manager of the chain of pet shops.

He is enthusiastic about pet food industry, now its infancy in India but has the potential to become one. "Awareness is increasing, people are getting more and more interested in pets and pet care products. Competition is also coming in, which is a good sign."

Pets does not mean only dogs and cats. Meet Abhik Mazumdar, a trained lawyer from NLSIU Bangalore, left active practice to work with his passion – fishes.

He successfully converted his childhood passion and hobby into a successful commercial venture. You can also meet Mazumdar at the Fourth India International Pet Trade Fair to be held in Noida over the last weekend of January. He will be talking about maintaining an acquarium and answer all questions with examples. His company, Reef and Stream is India's first specialised aquascaping firm. "Our core competence lies in creation of technically correct and aesthetically pleasing aquaria, in almost any shape, size and type," he says.

The Pet Trade Fair will also bring in several other experts like Abhik, all knowledge banks in their chosen passionate professions.

We promise you it will be an outing that will help you take a plunge into the growing pet business.

When, pet care product business alone in India is estimated at Rs 60 crore in 2008 according to Euromonitor. Given the near saturation of pet industry and pet food industry in the West, India offers exciting possibilities as it is estimated to grow at around 15 per cent to 20 per cent.

According to Euromonitor International Forecasts, (an authoritative body that analyses pet industry globally), India is witnessing encouraging growth. Substantial increase in number of pet keepers and their penchant to provide the best for their pets, is traslating into a potential investment avenue for the entrepreneur. The economy pet products accounted for 61% of total cat and dog food value sales in the country in 2007, up from 32% in 1998, Euromonitor says to paint a rosy picture for the trade in the next few years to come.

While the overall growth of Indian pet food and pet care products was less than that of China in the 10 years to 2007, Euromonitor International forecasts that India will achieve a CAGR of 11% between 2007 and 2012.
